Biography

Andy King is the Labour Party's Parliamentary Spokesman for the new Rugby Constituency.

Andy King and his family have lived in Rugby for over 30 years. A lifelong Labour supporter, Andy joined the local Labour Party when he moved to Rugby, and he has been an active local campaigner for Labour ever since. Andy is deeply involved in a wide range of local community and faith groups. He is also a long-standing and active member of the trade union Unison.

Andy has wide experience of representing local people and fighting for local causes. He was the Member of Parliament for the old seat of Rugby and Kenilworth from 1997 to 2005, and he previously represented Rugby residents on both Warwickshire County Council and Rugby Borough Council. Andy has also been a governor at several local schools and a member of Warwickshire Police Authority.

In July 2007, Andy was chosen by local Labour Party members to stand for Labour in the newly-formed Rugby constituency at the next general election.

After being selected as Labour's Parliamentary Spokesman for Rugby Constituency, Andy said:

"I am deeply honoured that local Labour Party members have chosen me to stand for Labour in Rugby at the next general election. Being an MP is the greatest honour that any community can bestow. It was a huge privilege to represent the old seat of Rugby and Kenilworth in Parliament for 8 years until 2005.

"Being an MP also brings with it solemn responsibilities. I always did my best to fulfil those commitments to our community as our local MP, and I believe that I was successful. I am now committed to fighting hard for local people again."

Before entering Parliament in 1997, Andy worked as a Social Services manager with Northamptonshire County Council. He currently works in the Social Services team at Coventry City Council.

Outside work and politics, Andy enjoys spending time with his family and playing golf. He also enjoys watching sports -- he is a lifelong supporter of Celtic Football Club -- and reading detective novels.
